Solution to stop violence in Karachi
The unrest in Karachi marked by brutal target killings continues to demonstrate us the withering state in Pakistan. Karachi, a cosmopolitan state is home to many Pakistanis and is central to Pakistan’s economy. The atrocities, violence and target killings simply mar the significance of the city. The bodies of those brutally killed found in gunny bags in Landhi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Malir, Jaffarabad, Sarab Goth and in Korangi has been shocking!
July had been a bloody month when the city was out rightly drenched in bloody baths. However, this was not really the first time. Not only this but in the past few days, up to 42 people had been killed in just 30 days including workers of different political and religious parties. Moreover, the recent action of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to walk out of the federal and provincial governments disturbed the peace between various power brokers in Karachi. This decision was followed by massive strikes, killings of migrants and dwellers in Karachi. Public transport was halted and innocent citizens were targeted by death squads of political parties.

A few days ago, the MQM’s chief, Altaf Hussain urged the dwellers of Karachi to store ration of a month considering the abysmal law and order situation of the country’s financial capital. He stated: “People should buy one month’s ration even if it requires them to sell their valuables.”He sympathized the brutal target killings which were even witnessed in the month of Ramadan and in grief he uttered: “The offspring of those who participated in the creation of Pakistan are being cursed and maltreated.” MQM as always blames gangs of Zulfiqar Mirza for these recent target killings and it also has registered an appeal with the President and the Prime Minister to make fool proof security plans to stop these killings.
To overcome the prevailing crisis in Karachi, it is inevitable to implement robust accountability mechanisms at the governmental level to fight against the terrorists. An accountable local government, efficacious law enforcement agencies and municipal police force should be shaped up at Karachi to counter terrorism. The major and leading political parties will have to come up on a consensus to reform and negotiate on the present crisis. United Nations Security Council may be brought in to suggest remedies to control the present turmoil in Karachi. Intelligence agencies should be assigned special roles to espionage on the major terrorists sabotaging the peace of the city.
