aaaaa… I think either we do not understand the problem here or we dont want to. Hello people WAKE UP!!!! The Lays sold in Pakistan, under Pepsico agreement are made here, fried here, all Pakistani masala added to it. now is it easier to get PIGFAT to fry the chips in or the vegetable oil/ghee? As for the ingredient termed as HARAM, No proof has been provided to support it. We use many products that use animal fats/ products, including ghee, soap, lotions, creams, medicines, insulin (local as well as imported) are you 100% sure that the animal from which the fat is extracted was slaughtered according to Islam, because if not, even a buffalo fat would be HARAM for you!!!!
The need of the time is to understand the actual ROOH of Islam, not just talking about Islam.
Please read the Masaail of Haram/Halal and know it, that in Quran it is strictly forbidden to term Halal things as Haram, and Haram things as Halal. so not only we should keep our eyes and brains open, but we should also judge news and reports before forwarding it to others ( a kind of a lie).
May Allah keep us on the Right Path!
All I can say is avoid International Lays, as you have SHAK. But Enjoy the Pakistani LAys! i enjoy! and read the label first!
Amin!

I would like to say only 1 thing in this regards that it may be correct that PIG FAT is use in the manufacturing of LAYS CHIPS……. but have we think ever about the SOAP which we use daily without any hesitation….. SOAP is purely manufacture by FAT of animals and all the multinational companies use PIG FAT in its manufacturing….. So we should think about it first then LAYS that we use it approximately 4 to 8 times daily in Bathing, Washing hand and face etc……
Thanks…..

Brother Muhammad Umar Shafique says that we should not be concerned about the possibility of pig fat in Lays chips in Pakistan because multinational companies provide jobs in Pakistan. This is perverse logic. That is like saying we should not put kidnappers in jail if they give a part of their ransom in charity.
I have read on the net that Disodium inosinate E631 can come from Pig fat, from fish and from artificial chemicals or a combination of the three. If the E631 used by Lays only comes from artificial chemicals then it maybe Halal but if it comes from Pig fat or a combination involving pig fat then it is haram. If is comes from fish it may be Makruh depending on how fish is stored, processed, etc.
Now we don’t know what is the origin of E631 used by Lays in Pakistan. Maybe it is halal, maybe it isn’t. If the origin of E631 is Chinese then I have serious doubts that it is halal. However, we don’t know enough to pass judgment. It is not that Lays Pakistan is taking an ad or through the net assuring us that it is Halal, something they can easily do. And it may very well be the case that in Saudi Arabia they are not using this chemical and in Pakistan they are using it. Or in Saudi Arabia they maybe using more expensive version of this chemical and in Pakistan they are using some cheaper version derived from pigs. After all Saudis are more vigilant than us, and multinationals have sold contaminated milk and other products in Pakistan and Bangladesh but not in Saudi Arabia or UAE.
As a muslim I think unless we have clarity on the issue it is best to not accuse Lays of anything, but also be prudent and avoid consuming Lays chips. After all its only potato chips. We can easily eat other Pakistani brands of chips. Why risk taking on a huge sin just for the sake of a bag of chips?

But if you not trusting anyone even on company statements and certificates then i never write any comment for you peoples. You all well aware that same kind of fake stuff are created for Coca-Cola ,Nestle, Tang and many other multinationals companies but single one never proved yet.
So please clear your minds by thinking cool
Could anyone among you try to contact with originator of this fake propaganda (Dr Amjad) never i think you people only want to create more hype for lays consumers in lieu of nothing.
Kindly first you search for Dr Amjad and get some solid proof that E631 (Flavor enhancer) used by lays Pakistan in its Masala Flavor is derivates from Pig fat
But i challenge you all that you never can succeeds to get in touch with Dr Amjad which is a fake character of lays local competitors.
My dear brother and sisters hopefully you all think from your minds not from your hearts and it is better for us to think from our minds
So please search for Dr Amjad and find some solid proof please
It is easy to point out some one without any proof but it is not easy to present truth
Dears please for god sake don’t create misunderstands and hypes in innocent Muslims minds by only beating drum of this fake propagandas against multinational companies which provide us good quality stuff on an affordable prices and playing a vital role to make Pakistan better. Many of you also search career in these multinational companies instead to join local why? I think you can answer better and many of you presently serving these companies and well aware of their policies regarding quality and productions.

hello there everybody!!!!
i have read a declaration from the Research and Development Head of PepsiCo Pakistan Mrs. Saima Arshad. it was a letter which was in reply to a querry on the issue of Lays as being halal or haram. It was clearly stated that PepsiCo Pakistan doesn’t use any haram component in any of its products whether its Lays or Pepsi or any other product! So feel free to consume these items!
Another piece of info:
“The chemical E631 (sodium insonate) is obtained from a plant named Tapioca in Pakistan! So this confirms that no animal fat is used in the manufacture of these products!
hope i made it clear to all folks!

[NOTE: According to Saima Arshad, R&D Manager, these certificates are authentic and indeed from Pepsi Pakistan.
UPDATE: A new certificate from Pepsi Pakistan has been added below.]
I have received a number of forwarded emails regarding E631 being present in the Lays Masala which is a product of Pepsi. It is highlighted that E631 is produced from pig fat. According to a comment by Saad on my post “Pig Fat By Dr. M. Amjad Khan”, E631 is present in other Pepsi products as well like Cravys and Kurkure. It is also said to be an ingredient of Kolson Slanty.
Some googling tell that E631 can be generated in 3 different ways:
1. It can be obtained from sardines (fish).
2. It can be made from brewer yeast extract which is a by-product of beer making process.
3. It can be extracted from pig meat.
If method #1 is used then it is Halal. If method #2 is used then it is not Haram but it is better to avoid it. However if method #3 is used then most certainly it is Haram.
One of the readers Mr Umar Shafique gathered the certificates proving that E631 being used by Pepsi in Pakistan is from Halal source. According to these certificates there is no pig fat or any other haram animal fat. I am attaching the certificates here with his permission. So thanks to Umar we can now relax and enjoy Lays, Cravysm, Kurkuray and Slanty.
See below the certificate from Pepsi Pakistan ensuring that E631 used in Lays is from Halal Source:

Lays is produced in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan using 100% Halal ingredients
We assure our consumers and customers that Lays Snacks Pakistan uses only 100% Halal ingredients in all its food products. Some news reports from a small section of the media suggest otherwise, and are absolutely false.
All our ingredients (including flavor enhancer E631 that is used in Lays Masala, and imported from Thailand) are compliant with strict quality manufacturing and are 100 % Halal. E631 is produced from tapioca starch which is extracted from a plant called cassava. Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR), an established government body, has certified that Lays is free of all animal meat fat (i.e. it only contains vegetable fats). Jamia Ashrafia of Pakistan has also declared Lays as 100% Halal. E631 is also certified by the raw material supplier, as well as the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand, as Halal (and the latter has also specifically endorsed the use of the legend “Halal” for such flavor).
Lays chips are produced in Pakistan from the best quality natural potatoes. As a company proud of its superior quality products and best industry practices, Lays Snacks Pakistan is a responsible corporate citizen. We strictly adhere to the local food laws which include only using certified halal ingredients in all our products.
Lays Snacks are sold in many other Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Malaysia. In Pakistan, we employ over 1000 people in the fields of agriculture, production and distribution and are contributing to various social causes like education and health.
We have already replied to different sections of the audience via press release, holding statement and detailed religious and government fraternity endorsements – updating them on the facts and negating any misinformation. Furthermore, we are launching a nationwide print campaign starting tomorrow to inform general audience on the Halal legitimacy of all our snacks products backed up by authentic independent endorsements
Now please free your minds if you are true muslims
ENJOY 100 % LAYS

Dear All,
Please try to be reasonable. The proofs provided above are indeed an eye-opener. I, as a general audience can very well understand and reason with the above documents. In these times of virtual world mistrust and too much of unauthentic sources to cite from, such a clear, open and direct initiative to prove otherwise is indeed incredible.
I expect the respected members of this forum to come forward and exhibit their logical and practical thinking. I would .on my part like to shed light on the economic consequences of this false propaganda circulating about the Lays chips and its ingredients all around.
Pepsi Cola international says in its media statement: Lays Snacks are sold in many other Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Malaysia. In Pakistan, we employ over 1000 people in the fields of agriculture, production and distribution and are contributing to various social causes like education and health.
Let’s speak about Pakistan first. 1000 employees mean 1000 families. If this baseless debate keeps on circulating will not the future of these 1000 families be at stake? Of course labour makes the most important part of any organization and it is the labour who suffers in the end if and when work stops. Can a developing country like ours, already at the verge of bankruptcy with weak economic indicators afford such a mass level of unemployment?
And to speak of the Muslim world, where Lays chips is the number one brand with a huge distribution and consumption and a large work force in different capacities, will not such rumours bring down the already withering state of economy?
And on what cost? Rumours, falsehood and unauthentic sources.
Think.

Recently, Lays Pakistan has regrettably been bearing the brunt of various emails and consumers have been mislead into believing that E-631 used by LAYS, Pakistan, is a derivative of animal fat.
SANHA, an International Halaal certification authority has investigated the ingredients used by LAYS Pakistan and can confirm that their ingredients are Halaal complaint. Infact the E-631 used by LAYS Pakistan is derived from TAPIOCA STARCH, a plant based raw material which has been certified Halaal.
Consumers are advised to be wary of such malicious emails and urged not to circulate any such mail until the information has been verified and confirmed by a reputable expert authority.

Very true. Here is what SANHA-South African National Halaal Authority said about Lay’s chips. The authority endorsed that Lay’s uses no haram ingredient and is clear from all such allegations.
It has confirmed that the ingredients are Halaal compliant. The authority has explained that the E631 used by Lay’s Pakistan is derived from Tapioca starch, a plant based raw material which has been certified Halaal.
The South African National Halaal Authority is an internationally recognized organization and an acknowledged authority on all matters pertaining to the general application of the term Halaal with specific reference to Islamic dietary laws. It is committed to standardizing Halaal procedures internationally thereby rendering a credible service to both the consumer and the industry.

@ osman: I agree with you.Who is Dr. Amjad? Had he been real he would have come out and stood by his words. He would have not missed any chance of missing out the bouts of fame his research had brought to him. He would have been proud of himself for being our HERO.But Dr. Khan seems too shy with the public or maybe too much of a saint to accept our gratitude! Who is he? Where is he? And how authentic is his source? If he is right about his ingredient debate why not anybody else has come up with a similar stance to fight the several proofs presented by the company?
Does one report by some anonymous source and utterly unauthentic reference become voice of millions and millions of Muslims? When will we start seeing things from the lens of sense and not from behind the covers

Sir I really wonder why so many people are out there to prove that Lays are Halal. May be this has become a mindset in many Muslims to prove themselves moderate and tolerant even at the cost of important religious beliefs and cultural values.
I would like to respond to many giving references and focusing on oil only. They do not have a posotive and evidentry proof of these chips being halal neither they are owners of the company still they are so desperate to prove them halal and that people should eat them. Sir many people has written in a forceful and confident manner but, perhaps, in haste for reason better known to them. Please take a moment to read the information you have given references and addresses here and you will find out that although it is not confirmed that the particular taste enhancers used in Lays supplied in Pakistan are made from Pig meat yet there is a strong possibility for the same. Claim that E631 ( Sodium Inosinate) DOES NOT involve any animal products are proved false by the source you referred to i.e. http://www.food-info.net/uk/e/e631.htm. Further if animal fat ( pig fat being cheapest) is major ingrediant then why a particular fish is imported and used for which neither the manufecturer claimed nor is it a sensible business strategy.
One of the websites ( http://www.food-info.net/uk/e/e631 )referred to by advicates of Lays provides the following information:
——————————————————————————–
E 631
Origin:
Sodium salt of inosinic acid (E630), a natural acid, that is mainly present in animals. Commercially prepared from meat or fish (sardines). May also be produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars.
Dietary Restrictions:
Inosinates are generally produced from meat, but partly also from fish. They are thus not suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and in most cases not suitable for Jews, Muslims and Hindus, depending on the origin of the product. Only the producer can provide information on the origin.
—————————————————————————-
Please read the information yourself before spreading it and do not pass on misleading information that can result in harm to others religious practices. It is not allowed in any religion to whatever extent moderate it is.
Some religious people are trying to help Lays in this controversy. Jamia Asharfia has reportedly given fatwa in theur favor. May be, though reports are there that they denied it, yet if you ask someone we use halal oil etc, so is it right for the muslims to eat. They will say yes. Religious celebrity Junaid Jamshaid is appearing in an advertisement. Whether it’s for commercial gains or public service in favor of the multinational giant Pepsi, he used Allah’s words which he himself ignored. He claimed that he verified. But, what and froom where, he never mentioned. He mentioned oil but was ignorant of the real issue that is of the taste enhancer. May be he is still convinced on Lays being halal stil he and other perople witrh religious images and offices should act very responsibily as much more responsibility rests on their shoulder’s than an ordinary man. If they say it’s halal, people might accept, that’s why the company approached them, but then if it’s not halal, they are going to be held for so many haram eating resulting from it. And they should not forget Allah and Prophet’s are very clear that if there is a doubt of haram and halal, one should leave it (rather take it on a benefit of doubt.)

@ Imran: Quite an impressive post you have written but sadly it is too misleading. Instead of forcing us to accept what YOU think is right, I would have appreciated had you given valid proofs like Lay’s has been providing us for much time now.
You have raised a very serious issue. You have doubted Jamias authenticity and credibility of passing there verdict of true Islam. We all know that these Jamias have a complete grip on Islam and they are always in a better position to judge and evaluate. If eating Lay’s is haram….doubting the very fabric of our Islamic centres which impart religious knowledge to many is in what context right?
Also Jamia Ashrafia has not REPORTEDLY given fatwa……they actually HAVE GIVEN FATWA regarding this matter. Another prestigious Jamia Uloom Islamia Allama Binori Town has verified that Lay’s is free of all animal meat fat and contains only vegetable fat. The Jamia is of the view that Lay’s uses E 635 as an ingredient which is made from the combination of two ingredients E 631 and E 627. It has elaborated that the basic ingredient E631 is derived from vegetable fat. The Jamia has further explained that Lay’s purchase E 635 from its flavor house IFF. The ingredient is provided to IFF by a renowned company Ajinomoto based in Thailand.
Jamia Binoria has stated in its report that if the ingredient E 635 is derived from vegetable fat and that Lay’s purchase it from known sources then there are no chances of animal meat fat neither in the ingredient E635 or any other.
Jamia Uloom Islamia Allama Binori Town is a renowned centre of Islam not only in Pakistan but all over the world. Jamia Binori is widely recognized as one of the most influential centres of Muslim ideology in the world. The Jamia imparts knowledge on each and every doctrine of Islam and so far has produced hundreds and thousands of Muslim scholars. These scholars continue to serve the Muslim world with their insightful knowledge pertaining to Islam.
How will you know doubt the fatwas given by two authentic Islamic sources? I question.
Please clear yourself first and try to be reasonable.
Regards,
Humeira Aslam.

We already are a confused nation on the ‘haram and halal’. Seafood items that need not much scientific research, to ascertain the edibility are the unresolved mystery yet. Some quarters stil plant doubts even about the chicken eggs.
I forsee an uending debate on the issues like ‘lays’, further perplexing this nation.

Dear humeira aslam, its is not about personal likes and dislikes or personal assaults like I feel we have indulged in. It is a matter of belief of two major religions of this world-Jews and Muslims. I still wonder why we, muslims are so keep in proving our religion and/or fellow muslims wrong and others right.
Anyways, this point is very simple. Thanks to Lays manufacturers that they have printed the ingredients on the back of their packes or you would have even asked me ” prove these chips contain E631″. Of course I could never prove it unless I spend quite a sum and take the sample to some place with the facility and then you would say “I don’t believe this report because Lays have given us a better report” this is all ridiculous.
Well coming to the point please refer to the Lays Chips pack and read E631 printed on it. Now simply go and search for its ingredients. I strongly reject your claim on behalf of Jamia because almost all the independent and impartial sources, most of which are non-muslims, hold that E631 is derived from animal source mainly MEAT. Please refer to wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E631 and the same site someone has mentioned here in favor of Lays, please check it out at http://www.food-info.net/uk/e/e631.htm. Please do visit some other independent and out of this debate information sources also and do not rely on producer sources as they have their stake to save.
If you take a minute out and search the independent sources on the net you will find, as I did, that E631 is MAINLY prepared form sources that are strongly doubted to be HARAM form Jews and Muslims and are also avoided by some Hindus. In the countries where they are manufactured have pig fat available and widely used which is much cheaper than other fats and fish. I wonder why, then, the producer will import expensive fish meat from abroad and make the flavor from it.
I have to reiterate two this here: Firstly, not all the flavors available in Pakistan have this suspicious content but as far as I have noticed only the red pack of MASALAH flavor contains E631. Secondly, it MAY be produced from halah sources but other sources are in abundance and are real cheap. A strong probability exists that it is made form haram sources. And if one believes in the Holy Quran he must believe in the verse in which Allah Subanawatallah said that if you have a doubt (for something haram or halal ie right or wrong) then leave it means don’t do it. Now I believe that quitting eating Lays otr a flavor of it is not a hard thing to do against risking ones beliefs and practically speaking health too. Rest, you have access to all those suspicious food items in Pakistan also. So, if you still wanna have them, it’s your decision.
PS. The fatwas are based on the information provided to them. Any fatwa giving authority have not visited the manufecturing facility or conducted laboritory examinination. If they are asked ” we make this flavor from vegitable and chips are fried in vegitable oil, are they HALAL”. What would they say?

I like the arguments from both who are in favor and those who are against. But I would like to ask Ms Humeira Aslam if she is spokesperson for Lays Pakistan or is Mr. Imran a spokesperson for a competitor company of Lays? if not, and if you both don’t have any vested interest in this topic then thank you guys for providing in depth info/knowledge about this topic!
I am not into this debate of Haram/Halal but I would like to ask us that can’t we live without eating yet another product of a multinational company? We are already under heavy debt and every pakistani owes ~ little under $1000 to the lenders and one of the main reasons of this debt is the loan in the form of the establishment of subsidiaries of these mutinational companies. We are already a big consumer society who loves to buy “foreign ka item” and hates to buy indigneous products and behave and look like an indigneous. Can’t we eat local made chips or they are less tasty and/or unhealthy?
It’s not just about Lays, there are hundreds of other food, health, cosmetics etc products that are suspicious but being consumed with great pride becuase either those are made “not in pakistan” or by not by a pakistani company.
I understand that many multinational companies have invested in our country and have provided jobs to a good portion of the population but in return they have funneled Billions of (Billion with a ‘B’) dollars abroad. If that money had stayed with in the country then todays over all economical condition of pakistan would have been entirely different.
Anway, I think I just tried to make a point here. Any comments are welcomed!

Assalamualaikum,
I think that effort should be made to make a final conclusion about these reports whether they are correct or not. As we are muslims and eating halal is important and a must clause for our prayers to be accepted by ALLAH RABBULALAMEEN . plus eating Pig is not allowed in Islam becuse it makes people shameless and get them far away from our true Lord. So I request all the members or who ever is the part of this chain whether you do research or whatever! Please show the truth

After research it has been proven that Lays are manufactured in Pakistan but the (taste Enhancer) that is used in it is brought from abroad which contain Pork. So it is now proved that Layz is HARAM to eat.
Let me tell you that taste enhancer is either made of vegetable or Meat, and it was tested that “taste enhancer used for Lays are of meet” and the cheapest fat is of PORK for making this taste enhancer. Now what is the doubt left????/
I appeal all muslims to stay away from LAYS and promote your ow country’s HALAL FOOD

Asalam-o-alikum
to all my muslims brothers.
Recently I received an email from International frito-lay customer service centre.
IN that they mentioned that majority flavors are not halal.
below is an email of the frito-lay company
Thank you for contacting Frito-Lay. Unfortunately, none of our products are certified Halal. We hope the following information will be of some assistance when choosing Frito-Lay products.
A number of our cheese seasonings are made with animal enzymes. If you want to avoid these enzymes, you might want to avoid our snacks that list “cheese” and “whey” as ingredients. Only a few snacks have animal flavors and they will always be listed on the ingredient statement, never hidden under “natural flavors.”
We have a list of kosher snacks on our website. All the snacks listed are free of animal enzymes and flavors. You’ll find it in the “Your Health” section, under “For Special Dietary Needs.”
Our non-seasoned, salted-only snacks, such as Lay’s Classic, Ruffles Original, Fritos, Santitas, Tostitos, Original SunChips and Rold Gold Classic Style Pretzels, do not have enzymes of any kind.
Thank you again for choosing Frito-Lay snacks. We will continue to provide the information you need to make safe, great-tasting choices.
Best regards,
Belinda
