PINX

PINX is the sartorial brainchild of ‘Pinky’ Durrany who launched the luxury pret label in 2009 to much fanfare among social circles
The PINX patron is a woman who is in touch with her bold inner goddess and is unafraid to stand out, yet she is imbued with an irrepressible je ne sais quoi aura. A composed diva…glamorous, elegant, confident and full of fun.
Pinx’s collection for FPW3 entitled ‘Goddess Unleashed’ is a capsule collection of flow-y sumptuous silk and fine cotton gowns in rich jewel tones and neutrals, embellished with elegant tassels, delicate lace, shimmery crystals and chunky stones. Goddess Unleashed is a collection that travels well, whether it be to a private soiree in Karachi; a Red Carpet event in Los Angeles or for a romantic getaway to Hong Kong.
You can’t ignore the PINX Goddess wherever she goes. And here she is unleashed…

Sana Safinaz

Established in 1989 Sana Safinaz, founded by Sana Hashwani and Safinaz Muneer, is one of the most prestigious and established fashion labels in Pakistan.

Partners and sister’s-in-law Sana and Safinaz are the driving force behind the Sana Safinaz life-style brand.

On the apparel side there are four separate collections comprised of the Pret, Diffusion, Bridal/Couture and Export lines.

The duo also have a separate furniture and home interiors division which also provides clients with state of the art interior design services.

Last but not least is the designer Sana Safinaz lawn which is launched and exhibited once a year during the summer season and is consistently dubbed the most successful and well received lawn collection of the year.

The duo are the sole designers for all their collections and are innovators and trailblazers in their business endeavors.

Sanam Chaudhri

Launched in 2007, Sanam Chaudhri’s urban chic-meets-pret creations have graced the runways to critical acclaim in PFW 2009 and again in 2010. In 2011 this label broke new ground with playful citrus colors in a variety of fabrics at the Veet Fashion Show.

Sanam Chaudhri showed us fashion is all about cut and style – with which even simple cotton can turn heads in the evening! An Indus Valley graduate, Sanam Chaudhri borrows liberally from her background in textile design to create enviable one-off pieces with a combination of textures and colors that work unusually well together.

Sanam Chaudhri has internationally exhibited in Dubai and Singapore and currently stocks locally and overseas. Her enviable style and eclectic yet wearable pieces are currently stocked at Labels (Karachi and Lahore), Fashion Pakistan Lounge (Lahore), Peacock Lounge (Karachi) and Rivaaj (Dubai).

My central fashion mantra has always been ‘less is more’ – you can be understated yet dramatic. I never overcrowd my work with a mishmash of glitzy crystals, sparkly sequins and golden ‘dhaaga’ all desperately vying for attention.

Instead I allow cuts, drapes, textures and color palettes speak for themselves with minimal embellishment. One of my favorite tools is an accent – be it some ‘kaam’ or a dash of an unexpected color. To quote Yves Saint Laurent “fashion fades but style is forever” – I try to incorporate this into my work. My creations exude ‘style’, with the ability to dress up or dress down with accessories as the occasion demands.

Umar Sayeed

Umar Sayeed is undoubtedly Pakistan’s pride and is also one of the grandest luxury labels from the region. Since 1989, his name is synonymous with the revival of our age-old textile and heritage. Using his ensembles as a canvass, he plays with rich textiles and detailed embroideries of Pakistan to create stunning and contemporary images, which are truly reflective of a modern, progressive Pakistan.

Umar is regarded as one of the premiere fashion designers of the Subcontinent who in the last two decades has not only introduced a number of fashion statements, but also has revived many a dying crafts.

Umar has shown extensively in the US, Hong Kong, UK, Bahrain, UAE and India. He has been invited to showcase his collections Fashion Pakistan Week and Dubai Fashion Week.

Along with his atelier in Karachi, he maintains presence in Lahore, Dubai, London, Miami, New York and Hong Kong.

Shamaeel’s 2012 Spring / Summer Collection opens with the “Bouquet Theme”; the collection comprises separate coordinates and high fashion garments, adorned with romantic and bold florals, and a variety of bouncing hemlines lend themselves to a mood of fresh energy.

Zahid Basheer

My collection is about old antique Banarsi.
the entire look is very tradional without any emblishment on it. I have designed Rani coats, Tilasmanic Kaftans n Jackets. The fabrics that i have used is 50 to 100 years old. It includes Chandi pati banarsi, Tanchoi, Mughal brocate, tissue, n velvet.

The name of the collection is “Uns” which means” love” n i have dedicated this collection to the 3 most important people in my life my mother,my wife and my daughter Pareesa.

Feeha Jamshed

This collection is solely dedicated to my sister Minnaal Tanvir Jamshed, who passed away tragically last year in Paris. She was the eldest of five and was the soul of the family. She was a force to reckon with and this collection is just an inch to celebrate and remember her at her best which was practically every second, whether she was going through the most toughest phase of her life i dont remember her not smiling.

This show is to remind us of angels that exist in the world and teach you things that stick with you for the rest of your lives..

to remind us of her compassion, love, sensitivity, generosity, her love for learning and then spreading it to ppl.. the act of just touching everyones heart without her knowing it..her love for music, writing, Food… her beauty, inside and out..

One of the most special and unique people we will ever know. In the audience if anyone who knew her would agree with me and that they will feel her being around as i did while making it. A special mention of my best friend Sana hafeez baby sister Rooha hafeez who passed away shortly after Minnaal, this is for two angels smiling down on us who changed our lives forever…

Pakistan political scene

Pakistan, a country with so called civil government in place since 2008 is going to complete its four year in power (Though it is a different question what power it has). Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led coalition government in Federal and other three provinces has done little to bring any change for better for the people of Pakistan.

As the next general elections time is approaching near soon all the political parties are heating up their campaign for a decisive victory to form a new government that can do something good for its people.

Pakistan People Party led coalition government is facing serious doubts over its credibility and its ability to tackle the issues from the common man of Pakistan though it is yet to be seen to what extent PPP suffer loss in elections.

PPP Once a strong party in times of Late Benazir Bhutto is facing worst threats since its creation, threats of being uprooted in elections as loyal people are constantly leaving it, Former Federal Ministry Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Former Interior Minister Sindh Dr Zulfiqar Mirza are just two examples of these three years who have dissented from the vested policies of some top men in the PPP and are now likely to join the opponents for a wide range of issues.

PPP main rival is PML-N in Punjab; it is also being targeted by a new political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf called (PTI) led by Imran Khan who is calling to people for uprooting the corrupt and incompetent PML-N from Punjab. Analysts believe Mr Khan is quickly gaining ground over PML-N and if he continues to go like this way he could possibly wipe out N league from Punjab.

While PPP former Interior minister Zulfiqar Mirza is going to very limit to push MQM out from Karachi and for PPP to gain some healthy political scene in Karachi as well, MQM seems afraid of Mirza who has just been a most dreadful dream for it ever since its creation by a former military dictator of Pakistan.

Karachi target killings are though lowered after the interference of Supreme Court in the sad affair, according to many this halt in violence is not permanent and can start any time again.

Many are seemed even disgusted with the recent verdict of Supreme Court in which it just took no concrete step to stop violence permanently in Pakistan economic hub. Supreme Court in its verdict does not even call on government for solid steps to ensure violence doesn’t erupt again.

MQM recent confessions of accepting arrested Ajmal Pahari and other target killers are enough to ban this so called political party but Supreme Court took no notice of the Joint Investigation Team reports submitted to it.

Supreme Court would have to be proactive on Karachi issue to avoid bloodshed in Pakistan economic hub and should dictate the government because it lacks any will to take a stern action against its allied party killers.

Sources have revealed that PML-N MNA from Rawalpindi Hanif Abassi is soon going to join Imran Khan Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

It has also been learnt that Abassi is angry with the policies of Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif that of nepotism and violation of merit in his city.

It will be major breakthrough for PTI and would virtually seal the victory of PTI from Rawalpindi. Abassi who joined PML-N before 2008 general elections is a man with strong support in his constituency. It would also be a clear signal of PTI popularity and a signal of PTI popularity in throughout the country.

PCB new Chairman

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking its new chairman that can see the world with open eyes and put the game of cricket on a right path unlike its current chairman Ijaz Butt who has made a mockery of cricket in the country in his three year term.

Sources have reported that former National Bank Chairman Ali Raza is a strong candidate for the PCB head post. Ijaz Butt is going to complete his tenure on October 8th. It goes only to the Ijaz Butt that in his tenure a visiting Cricket side was attacked in a host country named Pakistan. The sad incident on March 3rd 2009 stopped the International cricket in Pakistan and our grounds are still vacant of International cricket even after almost three years.

Ijaz Butt where played havoc with the game of cricket in Pakistan he also earned shame for Pakistan by worst spot fixing scandals in cricketing history and by letting his international players alone instead of providing them with legal and moral support.

Ijaz Butt also reduced our International players of class to shame and forced them to retire much before their retirement age, Inzmam ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Shahid Afridi are only some of the examples.

PCB new Chairman

In Butt tenure, selectors had virtually no voice except Abdul Qadir who was replaced soon after he led the team to a maiden T20 World Cup win in 2009.

Pakistan cricket needs a conscious head that can engage the players and instead of demoralizing them support them and enhance their performances by offering them rewards and benefits if they perform better.

It only happens in Pakistan that a captain leading his side to World Cup semi final after 12 years is sacked by his country board.

Ali Raza is a senior banker who has served as National Bank Chairman thrice and understands the key matters well, we hope he will play a key role in improving the game of cricket in Pakistan and bring International cricket back to Pakistan.

Preserving culture in West

By F. Khan

Having been studying in an occidental state for the last one year and seven days, I have found my inherent bliss sprouting upon meeting any of my countrymen. However, despite being a stranger in a foreign land I couldn’t give up my habit of investigating a person’s nature and comparing it to my mental portraiture of a true cultural-cum-country representative. As like expatriates in Canada, American and other European states, the possession of British passports has made majority of Pakistanis prefer themselves being called Brits rather than Pakistanis; they consider belonging to a clan superior to Pakistani cousins; they like speaking English in an anglicising accent despite having forgotten reading and writing in Urdu and above all, the possessors of Visas stamped on Green Passports are treated by them as ‘surplus beings tolerated by their new alleged motherland’.

Though not seeming to conceal their ancestral nationality due to the fear of inviting countless suspicions like American and Canadian expats, some traits of British youths still place them in the acronym xBCD family (where x= ‘B’ for British in this case, Born, Confused, Desis). Due to a huge chunk of Pakistanis here, for a Brit-born Pakistani, the struggle stipulated to preserve identity does not seem to be that strenuous. Despite, the true meaning of identity still eludes today’s BBCDs making majority of them acquire the feature of a ‘coconut’ (white inside and dark outside). The perplexed definition of ‘identity’ as per viewed by them is either bondage with religion, race, ex-land or current country. Nonetheless, the struggle for coping discrimination is negligible when compared with the way dark coloured Native Americans were enslaved by European colonists.

The above lines depict the common perception about Pakistani Britons; however, a few causeries with Mehreen, a doctor-in-the-making at one of the most prestigious medical schools of country, totally transposed my viewpoint. The degree of orientalism and the fervent love for preserving cultural and traditional norms I found inculcated in the lady made me exultantly amazed.

A typical Pakistani college girl living in a city, despite being not unaware of her upcoming responsibilities as a good ‘Baho’ adept in taking control of cooking and home affairs, spends most of her time talking to ‘Sahelis’, imagine being wed with Mr. Perfect as impersonated in a Bollywood movie and decorating herself up etc. For the soul belonging to some conservative family such thinking paradigm remains limited to ‘sartaj’ of a PTV drama.

However, for Mehreen, the case is contrary. Starting from cooking, astonishingly she owns a tinge of perfectionism by having a grip on preparing all sorts of dishes ranging from famous Peshawari ‘chapli kebabs’ to Lahori ‘payes’ to deserts including ‘ras malai’ etc. Notwithstanding having spent a major chunk of her time studying and working with English peers, she is successful in maintaining a correct balance between preserving Eastern values and holding complaisance to English organizational formalities. Unlike other expat-country fellows, she is proud to openly declare herself a patriotic Pakistani amidst a crowd of ‘Goras’. When asked about her opinion about opting to live in Pakistan, her enthusiastically affirmative nodding was complemented by an Eastern statement ‘if I get my parents agreed!’

A young girl living alone in a self-owned house, miles away from her parents, and having an unrestricted access to options of availing luxuries dreamt by a typical modern day English university girl, Mehreen spends most of her free time reading Urdu books and reciting Quran. She has a profound love of her mother tongue ‘Urdu’ and is an avid fan of reading Urdu novels and ‘Khawateen Digest’. Living in an environment dominated by Lady Gaga’s way of toning the heart, the Doctor-gonna-be has a liking for Pakistani dramas (less modern than girls back in Pakistan who are dominated by Star Plus way of living) and craze for listening to old Pakistani and Indian songs having a message of sincere love, in addition to listening ‘sufiana kalams’.

With countless opportunities for quenching vicious carnal thoughts mostly available with tags of “students’ night” or “Saturday night” etc, the oriental lady prioritize staying in home and waits for a hubby via an Eastern wedlock. She strictly defends herself with cultural and religious clues when confronted with the propagating western ideology about marriage being an authoritative bond liberating a girl from her financial independence and leading to an inferior social status.

Her sensible nature and good character has earned her trustiness from her family. Contended with the purity of her character, unlike other Eastern girls in West, (Dr.) Mehreen is free from struggles made either by suppressed untouched Easternized-Western ladies to prove themselves open-minded through attending parties or by hangdog babes to scavenge their moral guiltiness through talking about ‘desi’ family values.

On finding me uttering bad remarks about the traits of Brit-Pakistanis, she used to support her country-fellows by pointing their achievements made so far. An egregious girl, she is committed to get her religion and country portrayed as soft image through the minds of English people and uses to actively participate in the Islamic and Pakistani society of her university. Upon hearing any of her fellow Pakistani’s recognized contribution in any realm, one notices a sign of elated bliss on her forehead. Desirously having a liking to learn about Pakistani culture and its languages and with a genius brain, I was surprised to hear Mehreen, a British Pakistani lady groomed in an Urdu speaking family environment, saying to one of her friends in seraiki ‘me teko miss karendi paye ha’.

Voluntarily playing the role of a cultural and religious ambassador and representing an emblem of a true Pakistani-Muslim abroad, her mission is to work for the emancipation of women in Pakistan on grounds supported by Islamic teachings. The stories of Mukhtara Mai and the like are the preluding sources of motivation for her aim.

As with other girls, Mehreen does need a good hand for a better and prosperous future and I hope after finding a perfect partner having care and respect for her and her inner talents, she will in true sense turn her noble aims to reality. Sitting thousands of miles away from my village where merely a face covered with veil is the metric for gauging a girl’s character, I have found someone in a ‘Kafir-Gora’ country having lineaments to fulfil the expectations demanded by the modern-day scenario back in my homeland.
